Acute changes in oxytocin predict behavioral responses to foundation training in horses

چکیده

Ensuring horse welfare is a central aim in equestrian activities. Training an important context for welfare, as horses form long-lasting representations of people and actions at young age. However, only few studies have addressed horses’ emotional responses during early training with humans. In this study, we followed N = 19 horses, including naïve yearlings more experienced two- to three-year-olds, through five foundation sessions over nine months. Our goal was combine physiological behavioral measures assess training. Specifically, measured salivary oxytocin (sOXT) 100 samples cortisol (sCORT) 96 before after sessions. We also recoded Changes sOXT predicted individual variation responses: Horses who showed affiliative human-directed behaviors had increases sOXT, while indicators discomfort decreases sOXT. Salivary not related responses, but lower sCORT concentrations both training, all indicative fear or progressed. addition, increased longer sessions, consistent the established role responding physical stressors. conclude that positive negative corresponds acute changes suggesting may be useful non-invasive indicator horses.

Preliminary investigations of horses’ (Equus caballus) responses to different bridles during foundation training

Throughout equitation history, bitted bridles have been the primary method of controlling the ridden horse. In response to health and behavioral concerns arising from the use of bitted bridles, bit-less bridles offer new methods of steering and control. However, the effectiveness of bitless bridles on horses had not been previously examined scientifically. Therefore, the current study measured ...

The responses of horses to predator stimuli

It is not known whether the instincts of wild horses have remained strong during their centuries of domestication. Knowledge of this matter would give riders the opportunity to know more about the behavior of horses and consequently about safety for both horses and riders. In this current research, we studied the behavior of fifteen Caspian miniature horses of different ages and sexes using sti...

Physiological Changes in Jeju Crossbred Riding Horses by Swim Training

The changes in physiologic parameters by swim exercise duration were examined in five female well-trained Jeju crossbred riding horses that had riding experience of more than three years without swim training experience. The horses were performed with swim exercise for 10 min (60.0 m/min) once a day for 14 days. Physiologic characteristics and haematic parameters were measured before swimming, ...

Behavioral responses of Escherichia coli to changes in redox potential.

Escherichia coli bacteria sensed the redox state in their surroundings and they swam to a niche that had a preferred reduction potential. In a spatial redox gradient of benzoquinone/benzoquinol, E. coli cells migrated to form a sharply defined band. Bacteria swimming out of either face of the band tumbled and returned to the preferred conditions at the site of the band. This behavioral response...

Training-induced changes in clotting parameters of athletic horses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of training on prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and fibrinogen (Fb) concentrations in horses to assess potential adaptive response to training. Fifteen clinically healthy horses were enrolled in the present study and equally divided into three groups. Group A completed an intense training program, group B participa...
